How we help our local community

Mental health

With our Athena Meet events, we have so far raised over £2000 for three charities Circle, SAMH, and YoungMinds.

I am a big advocate of using strength training as a vessel for personal growth. This can improve our mental health as many studies show. Lifting is a form of mindfulness, a way of regulating and expressing our emotions in a safe environment.

The link between self-improvement and mental health is undeniably present, and what better way to level up than to become a stronger version of yourself? I know it’s helped me in ways I can’t just explain in a few words, and a lot of my clients would say the same.

All the Athena Meet events are dedicated to a chosen charity. I tend to choose charities based on what is closest to the heart of the Athena community.

physical wellbeing

Strength is a fundamental part of physical wellbeing, whether you want to ‘look better’ or ‘feel better’ there is a place for strength training in all training programmes.

At Athena, we will work on building a stronger version of YOU, programming what YOUR body needs in-line with YOUR set goals. Every programme and plan is designed for, and tailored to each individual.

community

Building a community has been at the very heart of Athena from day one.

‘‘I wanted to create a place where everybody feels like they are a part of the family, like they belong’’.

With our group coaching, Athena Meet events and online community groups, we are able to keep growing and expanding our reach.

The Athena Meets have also been open to lifters from different gyms and areas.

‘‘I want to give every new lifter an opportunity to take part in the Athena Meets, whether you’re an Athena lifter or not. The way I see it, it’s the more the merrier, and if I can help give new lifters the confidence to try out powerlifting, then I’m doing what I love to do’’ - Kimberley Wilson

WE ARE ATHENA

“We Are Athena” is a short film that explores the unique and inspiring female powerlifting movement here in Edinburgh.

Founded, developed and nurtured by coach Kim Wilson, the project is championing female empowerment, community and improving mental health. Taking back control of their minds and bodies through the sport of powerlifting, the ‘Athena Army’ show how the right environment & support system can be such a positive outlet for so many people. Read more about the full story behind the project here.

ATHENA MEETS

raising the bar for charity

The Athena Meets are events designed to give newer lifters the opportunity to sign up to lift in a ‘mock powerlifting meet’. All proceeds of the Athena Meets are donated to a chosen charity which we announce when an event is booked. We would love to welcome you to lift, volunteer or support our lifters at the next Athena Meet!
