How we help our local community
Mental health
‘The Athena Meet’ originally a small intimate event, was designed to give new lifters the chance to lift on the platform in a simulated ‘Powerlifting Meet’ setting. After the success of the first 3 meets, we decided to expand the events to allow outside new lifters to join in on the fun!
The subsequent growth of the events gave us the idea to make every Athena Meet a charity event. We lift for a different charity every time, chosen by our lifters. We have so far helped charities such as Circle, SAMH; the Scottish Association for Mental Health, and YoungMinds - collectively raising over £2000 so far!
Not only are we proud of our hard work, we have also received such great feedback from participants, some of which have even used their newfound confidence to sign up as official lifters with Scottish Powerlifting!
I am a big advocate of using strength training as a vessel for personal growth. This can improve our mental health as many studies show. Lifting is a form of mindfulness, a way of regulating and expressing our emotions in a safe environment.
The link between self-improvement and mental health is undeniably present, and what better way to level up than to become a stronger version of yourself? I know it’s helped me in ways I can’t just explain in a few words, and a lot of my clients would say the same.
physical wellbeing
Strength is a fundamental part of physical wellbeing, whether you want to ‘look better’ or ‘feel better’ there is a place for strength training in all training programmes.
At Athena, we will work on building a stronger version of YOU, programming what YOUR body needs in-line with YOUR set goals. Every programme and plan is designed for, and tailored to each individual.
community
Building a community has been at the very heart of Athena from day one.
‘‘I wanted to create a place where everybody feels like they are a part of the family, like they belong’’.
With our group coaching, Athena Meet events and online community groups, we are able to keep growing and expanding our reach.
The Athena Meets have also been open to lifters from different gyms and areas.
‘‘I want to give every new lifter an opportunity to take part in the Athena Meets, whether you’re an Athena lifter or not. The way I see it, it’s the more the merrier, and if I can help give new lifters the confidence to try out powerlifting, then I’m doing what I love to do’’ - Kimberley Wilson
